The following is a post to soc.genealogy.medieval (Google Groups), by Ronnie Bodine on 8 Apr 1999:
ALDULF de GATESDEN. Lord of Gatesden, Hertfordshire. In 1196, Aldulf paid 20s. to avoid service beyond seas and for scutage of his share of the fee of John de Bidun. Dead in 1225.
Married after 1185 and by 1196 to Ermengard, sister and coheiress of John de Bidun. She gave to the abbey of Lavendon land called Bruneswude in the fields of Lathbury, Buckinghamshire. She, her sons John and Richard, and
grandson John (son of John) are named in the 1254 IPM of Maud de Rocheford, widow of John de Bidun (CIPM, 1: no. 323). Ermengard was a widow in 1225 when she gave her grandson, William de Gatesden, 1/2 a virgate of land in Lathbury. She was still living in 1240-1 when she was involved in land dealings in Lathbury, but was probably dead by 1242-3.
3. John de Gatesden.
4. Peter de Gatesden.
5. Richard de Gatesden.
NOTE: Ronnie also gives evidence of another John de Gatesden, who he believes was Adulf's brother. This John had custody of the lands while the above heirs (John, Peter, Richard) were in their minority.
