John Benson's article, (DCNQ, xxiv, 9, (1950/51), argued that Vivian, in his Pomeroy pedigree, had conflated Thomas de Pomeroy of Sandridge [ Devon, not Dorset ], who had married Joan de Chudlegh, with his grandfather, Thomas, fourth son of Henry de Pomeroy by Joan de Moels. [As Thomas de Pomeroy of Sandridge and Joan de Chudlegh had in common these latter two as great-grandparents, Thomas and Joan would have been related in the third degree (Joan, daughter of James de Chudlegh by Joan, daughter of Henry, son of Henry de Pomeroy and Joan de Moels).]

Benson goes on to suggest that, although Thomas had no issue by Joan de Chudlegh, there was no reversion to an otherwise "fatherless" Edward de Pomeroy but that this Edward was probably the son of Thomas by a second wife whom Benson postulates as of the St. Clere family, his argument being that St. Clere appears as a first name in one of Edward's sons, grandsons and great-grandsons and that Edward's descendants quartered Cruwys in their arms, probably from an earlier marriage between St.Clere and Cruwys.
