  • ID: I16498
  • Name: Eleanore FERRE , Heiress of Tothill 1
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: ABT 1280 in Tothill, Louth, Lincolnshire, England
  • Death: AFT JUL 1341 in Braunton, Barnstaple, Devon, England 2
  • Death: AFT 1334 3
  • Note:
Thorne George (p. 16) has as the wife of Ralph, Eleanore Canc. This version follows the Raymond Gorges account, which is updated and has more information. It describes how the heraldic tradition provides evidence for the wife being Eleanore Ferre, although the conclusion is not certain.

Eleanor's death year is unknown, but she was alive in 1330 when there was recorded that "Dame de Georges wife of Sir John Peche concerned in an assault on Margery wife of John de Donveld" (Thorne George's work, p. 25). Gorges (p. 34) in addtion points out that Eleanore's grandson, William Russell described her as a "grasping, avaricious, tyrannical woman."

Though she married Sir John Peche, she continued to style herself as "Lady de Gorges."

    --------------------

He [Ralph de Gorges] m. before 20 Nov 1301, Eleanor (f). He was living 15 July, but was dead before 27 Sep 1323. His widow was granted as dower the manor of Wraxall and one-third of the manor of Braunton (25 Jan 1323/4) by assignments of 1 and 20 Mar 1323/4, enrolled 18 Dec 1324. The manors of Bradpool, Litton, and Combe, with the hundred of Beaminster, etc. had already been settled on her husband and herself cojointly. She m., in or before 1326, John Peche (1st Lord Peche), and was living 1334. [Complete Peerage VI:9-12, XIV:342]

    (f) Her parentage is uncertain. On 4 Nov 1306 Otes, son of John Ferre, had licence to enfeoof John de Claron of the manor of Tothill (Lincoln) and advowson thereof, with power to John de Claron to grant the same to Guy Ferre in tail, with reversion to Otes in tail, remainder to Ralph de Gorges and Eleanor his wife and heirs of the body of Eleanor, reversion to the right heirs of Guy. Guy Ferre d. before 6 Jul 1323, being then in possession of the manor by vitue of a fine between himself and John de Claron, remainder to Ralph de Gorges and Eleanore his wife and heirs of their bodies, remainder to right heirs of Eleanor. Very soon after livery of the manor was made to Ralph and Eleanor, (Fine Rolls, 15 Jul 1523, where it is stated that Guy de Ferre dsp.), and Eleanor herself settled the manor in later years on her daughter Joan and husband Sir William Cheyney. It is at all events evident from the above that she never was wife of Guy de Ferre, as sometimes stated. The acquistion of land at Sturminster Marshall has also been taken as indicative of marriage. On 9 Apr 1305 licence was issued in consideration of a fine for William de Caleshale and Cicely his wife to enfeoff Ralph de Gorges and Eleanor his wife of a messuage and carucate of land in Sturminster Marshall, and Ralph was to grant for life to William and Cicely his manor of Knighton.
