Name: Theobald GORGES , of Wraxall, KB, Sir 1
Birth: ABT 1330 in Knighton, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England
Death: 22 NOV 1380 in Wraxall, Bedminster, Somerset, England
Tibaut adopted the name Gorges because of his inheritance of lands through his wife. He served in Parliament with Maurice le Brune as Knight of the Shire for the county of Southampton in 1377 and was Sheriff for Somerset April 7, 1361 and October 18th 1380. He fought at the battle of Crecy 1346.
Note: According to CP, below, Theobald inherited from his mother Eleanor de Goges -- not his wife.
(b) She [Eleanor de Gorges] had also a son, Theobald, who assumed the name of Gorges, and from him descend the Gorges of Wraxall, the Lords Gorges of Dundalk, Gorges of Kilbrew, co. Meath, etc. In connection with which the Editors desire to record their thanks to Mr. Raymond Gorges of Washington, USA, for his kindly interest in this article. Sir Theobald de Gorges was sheriff of Somerset and Dorset in 1361, and of Hants in 1375. [Complete Peerage VI:13 note (b)]
