    ----------------------------

NICHOLAS POYNTZ, probably son and heir [of Pons son of Simon], proffered 300 marks in 1194 to have the King's goodwill. He was keeper of Gloucester Castle circa 1197, and a commissioner to assess tallage in Glos and Bristol, 1199; keeper of the Honor of Dunster, Easter 1199 to Easter 1201. In 1201 he paid 24 marks on 7 fees of the Honor of Gloucester for his scutage and for his exemption from serving for them overseas. He sided with the Barons against King John, and his estates and his son's, amounting together in value to 40 a year, were confiscated before 24 October 1215; but were restored 18 August 1216. He was sometime steward of Gilbert, Earl of Gloucester (1217-30).

He married, 1stly, Juliane, 2nd da. of Hugh BARDOLF (by Isabel his wife), and sister and, in her issue, coheir of Robert BARDOLF (died 1225), heir of his brother Hugh (died 1203). He married, 2ndly, before 29 January 1218/9, Joan, relict of Walter DE TRAILLY (dead in 1208-09), and widow of Robert D'AUBIGNY (died 1216), lord of the barony of Cainhoe, Beds, whose name she retained during her later marriages. Nicholas was presumed to be living 4 April 1222, and died before 2 November 1223. She was living in May 1242. [Complete Peerage X:671-2, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

Nicholas Poyntz, b. by 1173, d. by 2 Nov 1223, lord of Tockington and Swell, co. Gloucester, steward of Gilbert, Earl of Gloucester 1217-30, keeper of Gloucester Castle, keeper of the Honour of Dunster, son of Pons Fitz Simon, living 1166, lord of Tockington and Swell, co. Gloucester. [Ancestral Roots]

Note: Tim Powys-Libbe, in a post to SGM, 9 Jun 2001, citing "Historical and Genealogical Memoir of the Family of Poyntz" by Sir John Maclean, published privately in 1886 (and reprinted in 1983), has an extra generation, with this Nicholas being son of Nicholas & Johanna Trailly. CP indicates that Johanna Trailly is really Joan, widow of Walter de Trailly & Robert d'Aubigny, who went by the name of Joan de Trailly from her 1st husband, which was the custom for widowed women. Tim's source names this generation Hugh, instead of Nicholas (as MCS, AR, & CP do). I am going to keep the extra generation of Nicholas indicated by Tim's source, although not the wife, which CP explains was a 2nd wife of Nicholas. I think the chronology indicates another generation at about the point where Tim's source states there was one. CP doesn't seem too sure about the pedigree at this point, using the word "probably".
