  • ID: I14998
  • Name: Cicely Elizabeth COKESEY , Heir - Weston Turville 1 2 3 4
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: ABT 1330 in Goldicote Manor, Alderminster, Worcestershire, England
  • Note:
Cicely has been placed in 2 different generations of the Cokesey family by various sources: (1) Daughter of Walter & Maud Harcourt, being sister of Hugh & Joyce. (2) Daughter of Walter & Isabel de St. Pierre. However, because Cicely's grandson Thomas was b. by 1270 (see notes for Walter Huddington, d. >1290), and Walter & Isabel de St. Pierre were not married until 1253 when Water was only 10 years old (married as children, not ready to have offspring for several years), Cicely does nto fit with that generation (nor obviously with the next either). Therefore Cicely must have been a daughter of Hugh & Dionisia le Boteler. In 1498, when Joyce's offspring all died without issue, Cicely's descendants inherited part of Dionisia's estates (Weston Turville, Bucks) and part of the Cokesey estates (Hunningham, Warks), proving that she was a descendant (ie. daughter) of this couple.

Walter Cokesey did not have a wife prior to Isabe de St. Pierre, as he was only 10 years old at their marriage. His granddaughter Joyce inherited at least 2 mansions from the Braose family (Isabel's mother was Agnes Braose, sister of George who died without issue), which were returned to the Braose family when Joyce's line ended with the death without issue of Thomas Greville (alias de Cokesey) in 1498. These mansions did not go to Cicely's heirs because she was not a daughter of that marriage. Thanks to John H., a descendant of the Greville family who sent me the following 2 informative items:

    (1) "On the death of Thomas without issue in 1498, Thomas, Earl of Surrey (afterwards Duke of Norfolk) and Sir Maurice Berkeley, as cousins and heirs of George Braose, had special livery of his estates. Little Bookham, to the overlordship of which they had a claim as representatives of the Mowbrays, fell to the former, who settled it for life on his second son William Howard,"

    (2) "Margaret [widow of Thomas de Breuse/Broase (d. 1395), son of Thomas de Breuse/Braose (fl. 1361)], who married thirdly John Berkeley, held the manor at her death in 1444 when the heir was Hugh Cokesey, descendant of a brother of Thomas de Breuse (fl. 1361). NOTE: Thomas's brother was John de Breuse/Braose whose daughter Agnes m. Urian de St. Pierre, and their daughter Isabel m. Walter Cokesey and was mother of Hugh.

Hugh's sister Joyce Beauchamp held the manor at her death in 1473 and it passed to her son John Greville (d. 1480), whose son Thomas Cokesey or Greville succeeded to it. At Thomas's death without issue the heirs to the manor were Thomas Howard, earl of Surrey, and Maurice Berkeley, Lord Berkeley, who claimed as descendants of William de Breuse (fl. 1292)."
