    John Cherleton, 1st Lord (Baron) Cherleton, who was confirmed by Edward II 1313-14 in his tenure of the Powis estates through his wife, and died between Aug 1345 and 1353. [Burke's Peerage]

    BARONY OF CHERLETON or CHARLETON (OF POWIS) (I) 1313

    JOHN CHERLETON, son and heir of Robert C., of Cherleton in Wrockwardine, co. Salop, in right of his wife became possessed of the LORDSHIP OF POWIS, and other large estates in North Wales and though such right was hotly contested by her uncles, the heirs male, it was confirmed to him by Royal Charter 1313-14. From 26 July 1313 to 25 July 1353, he was summoned to Parliament by writs directed Johanni de Cherlton, whereby he is held to have become LORD CHERLETON. These writs from 25 August 1338 to 30 July 1346 bore the addition Seniori. Chamberlain to Edward II in and before 1314; Constable of Builth Castle, co. Brecon 1313/4. In 1319 he was required to raise 500 soldiers "de terris suis de Powys,"and was subsequently engaged in the wars with France. He joined in the rebellion of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, 1321/2, but was pardoned 11 September 1322. Ch. Governor of Ireland, under the style of Justiciar, 1337-38.

    He married, in 1309, before 26 August (she being aged 19, July 1310), by the gift of Edward II, Hawyse (Gadarn, i.e. the Hardy), sister and heir (1309) of Griffin ap Owen, otherwise DE LA POLE (e), only daughter of Owen ap Griffith, PRINCE OF UPPER Powys, by Joan, daughter of Sir Robert CORBET, of Moreton Corbet, co. Salop. She was living August 1345, but died before him, and was buried in the Grey Friars, at Shrewsbury, which she had founded. He died 1353, aged 85, and was also buried there.
