BARONY OF ZOUCHE OF HARYNGWORTH (III) 1382

WILLIAM (LA ZOUCHE), LORD ZOUCHE, or LA ZOUCHE (of Haryngworth), son and heir, was said to be aged 40 and more at his father's death. His great-grandfather, the 1st Lord, had licence, 27 October 1351, to grant the manor of Bridgwater, Somerset, to this William and his wife Agnes, who together also succeeded (under a settlement) to the manors of Brafield and Little Houghton, Northants, on his said great-grndfather's death in 1352. He may have been the man who was going to Ireland with William de Windsor, February 1368/9; he had seisin of his father's lands, 20 June 1382; was accused before Parliament of inventing an accusation against the Duke of Lancaster in 1384. but was acquitted; accompanied Richard II on his only expedition into Scotland, 1385; had licence to fortify and crenellate his manor of Harringworth and to have a yearly fair and weekly market there, 8 May 1387; and was one of those removed from Court by the victorious Lords Appellant, early in 1387/8.

He married, 1stly, before 27 October 1351, Agnes, apparently daughter of Sir Henry GREEN, Chief Justice of the King's Bench (1361-65), of Boughton, Drayton and Green's Norton, Northants, by Katherine, daughter of Sir Simon DE DRAYTON, of Drayton (f). She was living, 2 December 1391. He married, 2ndly, apparently after 28 April 1393, Elizabeth, widow of John (DE ARUNDEL), 2nd LORD ARUNDEL (died 14 August 1390), daughter of Edward (LE DESPENSER), 1st LORD DESPENSER, by Elizabeth de jure suo jure (according to modern doctrine) BARONESS BURGHERSH, daughter and heir of Bartholomew (BURGHERSH), 2nd LORD BURGHERSH. He died 13 May 1396. Will, directing burial at Harringworth, dated at Clipsham, Rutland, 4 May 1396, proved 4 June following at Stowe Park (j). His widow, who was assigned dower, 3 July 1396, died 10 or 11 April 1408. Will, directing burial in Tewkesbury Abbey, dated 4 April 1408, proved 1408 at Lambeth. [Complete Peerage XII/2:942-3, transcribed by Dave Utzinger]

    (f) See pedigree of Green of Boughton and Green's Norton in Baker, 'Hist.of Northants', vol. I, p. 32, where, however, Agnes is wrongly called Margaret and her maternal grandfather John de Drayton; also, for the descents of Drayton, VCH Northants, vol III, p. 237. Henry Green was a feoffee, bef. 1352, of the gift and settlement of Brafield and Little Houghton afsd. on William and Agnes; and Sir Henry Green of Drayton, the Chief Justice's 2nd son was apparently a feoffee of the Zouche estates in 1396, in order to fulfill William's will.

    (j) He mentions his wife Elizabeth, mother [in-law] Lady le Despenser, son and heir William, sons Edmund, Thomas, and Hugh, dau. Eleanor Lovel (probably the wife of John, 6th Lord Lovel and son [in-law ?] Thomas Ros. His sons John, Edmund, and Thomas are mentioned in the entail of 1391.

NOTE: There was a Thomas Ros who was his 1st cousin, being son of his mother's brother.

William la Zouche, 3rd Lord (Baron) (la) Zouche (of Haryngworth); b. c 1342, m. 1st by 27 Oct 1351 Agnes (d. on or after 2 Dec 1391), (?)daughter of Sir Henry Green, Chief Justice of the King's Bench 1361-65, and had issue, including three younger sons (John, Edmund, Thomas); m. 2nd after 28 April 1393 Elizabeth (b. 10 or 11 April 1408), daughter of 1st Lord (Baron) le Despenser and widow of 2nd Lord (Baron) Arundel de jure (though he was never summoned to Parliament), and d. 13 May 1396, leaving another son Hugh and a daughter (Eleanor, m. 6th Lord (Baron) Lovel); his eldest son by his 1st wife [William 4th Baron la Zouche]. [Burke's Peerage]
