Name: William COKAYNE , of Ashbourne 1
Birth: 1299 in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England 1
Death: 1323 1
William Cokayne, of Ashbourne; born 1299; married Sarah, daughter of Adam/Alexander de Mercaston, of Mercaston, Derbys, and heiress of her brother Thomas de Mercaston of Ashbourne, and died 1323, leaving (John), with a younger son (Robert, married Elizabeth and had a son William and a daughter Elizabeth). [Burke's Peerage]
Note: The birthdate of 1299 is 51 years later than the original one (1248) that I had for William. I also had two generations (both John) for William's son. I am not entirely satisfied with Burke's Peerage on this lineage. For example William is born 1299 and his son had children and died 1332 which leaves only 33 years for two complete generations with children. Also, the lineage starts out with an equally improbable set of dates. The first recorded Cokayne is John, living 1150--and his grandson Andrew is living 1277. That is 127 year span in 3 generations, barely acceptable, even if you take the first "living" as a birth date and the second as a death date.
I am not happy with Burke's lineage, but the internet is full of "wild" dates for this lineage as well, with many having children born before their parents, wives marrying husbands 70 years older, etc. Obviously more research has to be done. At least I am following a published source in sticking with Burke's.
