    Aubrey de Vere, 10th Earl of Oxford, as which restored Jan/Feb 1392/3 (having got back his nephew's possessions (but neither then nor later the hereditary post of Chamberlain of England) on the latter's death 1392), PC (Nov 1378-Jan1379/80); Secretary to Edward the Black Prince 1371; Envoy to Negotiate peace with France 1377 and 1383; Constable of Hadleigh Castle Feb 1377/78; Chamberlain of Royal Household by late Jan 1380/1; married Alice (died 29 April 1401), daughter of 3rd Lord (Baron) FitzWalter, and died 23 April 1400.     AUBREY (DE VERE), EARL OF OXFORD, uncle and heir, being 3rd but only surviving son of the 7th Earl, born circa 1338-40. On 13 July 1360 his mother granted him for life the bailiwick of the forestership of the King's Forest of Havering. In July 1366 he accompanied the Prince of Wales to Aquitaine; and, as a knight, in November 1367, having in October undertaken to abide with him for llfe. In September 1371 he was secretary to the Prince, who, on 22 July 1375 appointed him Constable of Wallingford Castle and Steward of the Honour of Wallingford and St. Valery. In 1377 he was one of the 3 envoys sent by the Princess of Wales to London to mediate with the citizens on behalf of the Duke of Lancaster; and King Edward appointed him one of the ambassadors to treat for peace with France. On 1 February 1377/8 Richard II made him Constable of Hadleigh Castle. He indented to serve overseas under the Duke of Lancaster, January 1377/8, and in March following he was preparing to go overseas with the King. P.C. November 1378 to January 1379/80. He was a joint commissioner of array in Essex in September 1380 and in 1386. Before 18 January 1380/1 he became Chamberlain of the Royal Household; and in March he was appointed one of the commissioncrs to treat with the Bohemian ambassadors about the King's marriage. When Richard met Wat Tyler at Mile End in 1381, Aubrey bore the King's sword. On 4 October 1383 he was appointed Chief Cominissioner to arrange for negotiations with France. In 1385 he served with the King in Scotland. After his nephew's fall he was removed from Court at the instance of the victorious Appellants; but on Robert's death, in 1392, he was restored to the entailed estates; and the King in Parliament (January-February 1392/3) restored the Earldom of Oxford to him and his heirs male. He made vain attempts to recover the office of Chamberlain of England in 1394 and 1397, and to officlate as such at the Coronation of Henry IV.

    He married Alice, daughter of John, 2nd LORD FITZWALTER , by Eleanor, daughter of Henry (PERCY), LORD PERCY. He died 23 April 1400, and was probably buried at Hadleigh. His widow, who was granted on 11 May 1400 the custody of the inheritance during the heir's minority, died 29 April 1401. [Complete Peerage X:233-4, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
