    EARLDOM OF OXFORD (XI) 1400

RICHARD (DE VERE), EARL OF OXFORD, 1st son and heir, was born probably in 1385. On 9 May 1401 custody of his lands was granted to the Countess of Hereford, in whose charge he remained until December 1406. From 1410 he was occasionally appointed a commissioner in Essex for various purposes. In November 1411 he was a Trier of Petitions from overseas in Parliament. On 5 August 1415 he was one of the peers who took part in the trial of Cambridge and Scrope at Southampton. He sailed to France with the King, and was one of the commanders at Agincourt, 25 October 1415. K.G. Nlay 1416. In 1416 he sailed with the fleet to relieve Harfleur and took part in the victory at the mouth of the Seine.

He married, 1stly, before 1400, (----), almost certainly a daughter of John (DE HOLAND), 1st DUKE OF EXETER, by Elizabeth, sister of HENRY IV and daughter of JOHN OF GAUNT, 1st DUKE OF LANCASTER. She died s.p., probably young. He married, 2ndly, in 1406 or 1407, Alice, widow of Guy DE ST. AUBYN, sister and coheir of Richard SERGEAUX, and 3rd daughter of Sir Richard SERGEAUX, by Philippe, daughter and coheir of Sir Edmund DE ARUNDEL. He died 15 February 1416/7, and was buried at Earls Colne. His widow, who participated in the Coronation feast of Queen Catherine, 21 February 1420, married, 3rdly, before 13 October 1421, Nicholas THORLEY, who died 5 May 1442, and was buried at Bobbingworth, Essex, being then a knight. She died 18 May 1452, and was buried at Earls Colne. [Complete Peerage X:234-6, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
