[Burke's Peerage]

    ---------------------

    ATHOLL

This Earldom, with Gowry (now together forming the north and east part of Perthshire), was one of the seven original Mormaerships of Scotland, the Rulers of which were styled Mormaers in the 10th century, and early in the 12th were known as Earls.

    EARLDOM of ATHOLL (I) 1115?

MADACH, son of Melmare (brother of Malcolm III, King of Scotland, 1057-98) was witness to the charter of Scone dated 1115 as "Madach Comes," i.e. Madach Earl of Atholl or Athole [Scotland]. He married about 1133, probably as a 2nd wife, Margaret, daughter of Haco, Jarl of Orkney, which island was then part of the Kingdom of Norway, and died between 1142 and 1152. His widow married Erland Ugni, Jarl of Orkney, who was killed 1156. [Complete Peerage I:304, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)

The following post-em by Curt Hofemann, curt_hofemann AT yahoo.com, adds more information:

witness to the charter of Scone, dated 1115, as "Madach Comers" [Ref: CP I:304]

The first Earl of Atholl who appears in actual Scottish record is Earl Madach, or Macdeth, who is named as a witness to the foundation charter of the Abbey of Scone, granted by King Alexander I, which is usually said to be granted in the year 1112-14, but was probably after 1116. Earl Madach is described by the Norwegian writer Torfaeus as a magnificent prince and cousin ('patruelis') of King David I. He bore the same relations to King Alexander I, as he was the son of their uncle, Melmare (called by the Norwegian writers "Melkfr'), who was the younger brother of Malcolm III, 'Ceanmore,' their father. Earl Madach also appears as a witness to a charter by King David I to the church of Dunfermline, dated between 1124 and 1127, and in two charters to the monks of Coldingham, which must be dated about or after 1140, while the latest record of him so far as has been ascertained, is in a charter by the same King to the monks of Melrose, dated in 1142 or 43. Earl Madach died some time before 1152, when his wife Margaret returned to Orkney. He appears to have been twice married. If so, the name and parentage of the first wife are unknown. After 1132 he married Margaret, daughter of Hakon, Earl of Orkney, who survived him and marrried, secondly Erlend Ungi, who was also made Earl of Orkney, and was killed in 1156. [Ref: Robert S.
