    BARONY OF HARINGTON (III) 1363

SIR ROBERT (DE HAVERINGTON), LORD HARINGTON, son and heir, born at Gleaston, and baptized 28 March 1356 at Aldingham. He was a ward of the King, who granted the custody of his lands in England and Ireland to his daughter Isabel, afterwards wife of Ingram de Coucy, Earl of Bedford. Having proved his age, he had livery of his lands in England in 1377, and of those in Ireland in 1380, though he had been non-resident during his minority. On the occasion of the Coronation of Richard II, 16 July 1377, he was ceremonially knighted, being then on the King's service at Calais. He was summoned to Parliament from 4 August 1377 to 21 December 1405, by writs directed Roberto de Haryngton'. As one of the Lords temporl under the designation of Le Sire de Haryngton, he swore on the altar of the shrine of St. Edward at Westminster, 30 September 1397, to maintain all statutes, &c., made in the preceding session of Parliament. His castle of Gleaston appears to have been built before 1389, for it is mentioned in that year. In 1398 he was pardoned for adhering to Thomas, Duke of Gloucester, in 1386, &c.; and in 1401 he had license from the Pope for a portable altar at oratories within his manors. His marriage was granted, 1363, to Richard de Pembrigg, but the grant was surrendered in 1372.

He married, 1stly, about 1376, Alice, da. of William (DE GR.EYSTOKE) LORD GREYSTOKE, by his 2nd wife, Joan, daughter of Sir Henry FITZHENRY,of Ravensworth. She died s.p., soon afterwards. He married, 2ndly, about 1383, Isabel, widow of Sir William COGAN, of Huntspill, Somerset, who died 1382 and daughter and coheir of Sir Nele LORING, K.G., of Chalgrove, Beds, by Margaret, daughter and heir of Ralph Beaupel, of Knowstone, Devon, who died 1386. By this marriage considerable estates in Somerset (Porlock), Devon and Cornwall came to the Haringtons. He and Isabel his wife made a settlement of the Lancashire estates in 1389. She died 21 August 1400. He died 21 May 1406, at Aldingham. [Complete Peerage VI:316-7, XIV:368, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
