    EARLDOM OF DESMOND (VI) 1420

    JAMES (FlTZ GERALD), EARL OF DESMOND, uncle of the last Earl, being a younger son of Gerald, the 3rd Earl. On 8 December 1388 his father obtained royal lic. to send him to Conor O'Brien of Thomond hibernicum to be brought up (nutriendum). As James, son of Gerald late Earl of Desmond, he was appointed a justice and guardian of the peace in cos. Waterford, Cork, and Limerick, and in the cross of Kerry, 10 December 1420. By indentures, dated Saturday before the Purification 31 January 1421/2, James, Earl of Ormond, appointed him Keeper, Governor, and Supervisor of all the baronies and lordships of Inchiquin and Imokilly, and of the town of Youghal, and Seneschal in all the said baronies and lordships, to hold for life, and to receive therefrom a rnoiety of all the rents and other profits of the same. Having brought from Munster to Carbury a force of 5,000 men to assist in suppressing the ravages of O'Conor and Meiler Bermingham, he was granted a subsidy from the towns of Meath, and was appointed, 23 August 1423, Constable of Limerick Castle, in compensation for his expenses. He obtained license for life, 11 August 1445, to appear in Parliaments and Great Councils in Ireland by proxy whenever he could not conveniently attend in person. On 27 October 1447 he had an indult from Pope Nicholas V for a portable altar.

    He married Mary, 1st daughter of Ulick mac Richard Burk, the MacWilliain Uachtar (i,e of Clann Rickard). She died in 1435. He died at Mocollop in 1462 or 1463, and was buried at Youghal. [Complete Peerage IV:246-7, XIV:255, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
