By and large, Rhode Island was settled by individuals who broke with the early Quaker principles of John Winthrop, and the ideals of the Leyden separatists. These individuals were fined, punished, had their guns and goods confiscated, and were exiled to Rhode Island. Still, they fared better than those of a similar persuausion who ended up being accused of witchcraft in 1692.
