ROBERT, COUNT OF MEULAN, 1st son and heir, by 2nd wife, was born probably about 1142. He succeeded to the comté of Meulan and the Norman baronies, also to Sturminster and the other small English estates inherited by his father, but not to the Earldom of Worcester or the city of Worcester. In the wars between England and France he lost the comté of Meulan, his great Norman lordships and even his English lands. He married, about 1165, Maud, daughter and coheir of Rainald, or Reynold (DE DUNSTANVILLE), EARL OF CORNWALL (illegitimate son of HENRY I), by Beatrice, daughter and heir of William FITZRICHARD. He died 21 September, about 1207. [Complete Peerage XII/2:837-8, transcribed by Dave Utzinger]

    and also in CP VII:Appendix I, p. 739-40:

ROBERT, COUNT of MEULAN, s. and h. In 1173, he adhered to the young King Henry in his revolt against Henry II, but was reconciled to the King, since he witnessed the treaty of Falaise between the Kings of England and Scotland in Aug 1175. Holding as he did lands both in France and Normandy, the conflict bewteen Philip Augustus and the English Kings placed him in a difficult position, and ultimately brought about his ruin. In 1188 when Philip took Vendome he captured 62 knights sent by the Count of Meulan to assist the defence. On 20 Mar 1190 he witnessed at Rouen a charter of Richard I for Canterbury. In 1191 he was excommunicated on accout of the part he had taken against the chancellor, Longchamp. In 1193 he adhered to Philip, and in 1194 Richard captured the castle of Beaumont. In 1196 he had again changed sides, for he was one of the barons who swore to the alliance of the King of England and the Count of Flanders against the King of France. After 1188 he established a commune at Meulan on the model of that granted to Pontoise by Philip Augustus. Soon after the accession of John he was involved in the struggle between that King and Philip Augustus of France. At first Robert appears to have wavered, but in Apr 1203 he decided to throw his lot with John. But in the very next month, May 1203, his son Piers, to whom he had committed the castle of Beaumont, handed it over to Philip, who in Oct, when Piers was dead, entrusted it to Guy, Seigneur of La Roche Guyon, Robert's grandson. Robert, who, in adddtion to his fiefs in France and Normandy, held lands in England, in a vain attempt to save his position, handed over all his estates on 1 May 1204 to his daughter and her husband the Earl of Devon. John, however, seized all his English estates, and Philip those in France and Normandy. At this date his three sons were dead (i). He m. c1165, Maud, dau. and coh. of Reynold (de Dunstanville), Earl of Cornwall, illegit. s. of Henry I. He d. a ruined man, circa 1207. [Complete Peerage VII Appendix I, p. 739-40]
