Hi Jim: In looking at our family history (actually my wife's) I read the following: "John's father, with his son John (the emigrant), born 12/24/1624, with his cousin Ralph, was a passenger on the Abigail in 1635. However, John did not remain in New England, but returned to England with his father where he had left his family. Later, in 1649 John with his wife Beatrix Josselyn, his infant son and his cousin Ralph with his wife Jane and two children Ralph and James, returned to New England.

I do have a passenger list of the Abigal, 1635 but do not find Ralph's name listed. I don't have authentication of this info. but feel reasonably certain that it is correct. If you come up with anything new, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, KEN

In looking at sources on the internet I have not found a passenger list for the Abigail which lists any Houghton/Hoghton family members. However the Winthrop Society (winthropsociety.org) lists a "Jo: Houghton" aged 4 on the Abigail voyage of 1635. Presumably "Jo:" (Joseph or John) did not come across by himself at that young age. So there is some evidence of the Houghton family on the Abigail.

    -------------------------------------------------

Ralph was initially at Charlestown MA in 1635; later at Watertown, and at Lancaster by 1652.

Ralph Houghton, Lancaster, 1676, where he was constable, collector of taxes, treasurer, &c. These were at the same place in 1703, Henry, Jonas, Robert, John Sen., John Jr., Joseph, and Jacob. [First Settlers of New England, NEHGR, vol 3, 1849, p. 401] NEHGR vol 11 p. 338 notes that he apprized the Lancaster house & estate of Edward Brecke on 20 Sep 1662.

Ralph is also listed by NEHGR as taking the oath of fidelity in 1652 in Middlesex County (probably Watertown).

For some reason the children John & Hannah both died in Dorchester within 2 days of each other 8-10 October 1675. The son Ralph was "of Dorchester" while an adult. Perhaps they were staying with him (possibly to avoid some epidemic?).
