  • ID: I01402
  • Name: Agatha of HUNGARY 1 2
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: ABT 1020 in Hungary
  • Death: 13 JUL 1054 in Scotland
  • Note:
Magna Charta Sureties does not give parents for Agatha. There is a lot of doubt as to who her parents are. I have the "classic" ancestry, but others (including Vajay) say it is Liudolf, Margrave of Westfriesland and Gertrudis, daughter of Hugh IV of Egisheim (whom I name Ludwig von Braunschweig, Count of Derlingau & Gertrude von Egisheim).

Cannon and Griffiths, The Oxford Illustrated History of the British Monarchy, describes her as the niece of Henry II, Emperor of Germany (Holy Roman Emperor). As Henry's sister Gisela married Stephen of Hungary, the ancestry that I have would fit that description. Of course Vajay uses the "niece" datum to portray a different ancestry.

Turton has Agatha "of Germany", as daughter of Bruno of Germany (brother of Emperor Henry II), thus making Agatha his niece.

    ------------------

In a post-em Jay Call kindly supplied the following from AR8, which reflects the current thinking. I am keeping mine to the "classical" ancestry until something is solidly proven (which may never happen).

    Jim,

To add further to the qualifications you already list re Agatha's parents, in the Eighth Edition of Ancestral Roots, Weis and Sheppard include the following information:

At 241-6, she is given as:

    "6. (prob.) AGATHA (AGAFIIA), (dau. of Iaroslav I), b. 1020s, d. abt. 1068; m. 1040s EDWARD THE ATHELING (1-20), called the Exile, Saxon Prince of England, b. 1016, d. 1057."

And, in the entry for EDWARD, at 1-20:

"Agatha, b. 1020's d. about 1068, probably dau. of IAROSLAV (241-5), Grand Prince of Kiev, by his wife Irina (Ingigerd) of Sweden. This parentage for Agatha is now the most probable. See Rene Jette, 'Is the Mystery of the Origin of Agatha, Wife of Edward the Exile, Finally Solved?' NEHGR 150 (1996): 417-432; and Norman W. Ingam, "Has a Missing Daughter of Iaroslav Mudryi Been Found?' 'Russian History/Histoire Russe' 25 (1998): 231-170 (with references to alternative theories)."
