  • ID: I00148
  • Name: Thomas GOODENOW 1 2
  • Sex: M
  • ALIA: Thomas /Goodnow/
  • Birth: 1608 in Donhead, St Andrews, Wiltshire, England 1
  • Death: BEF 29 MAR 1665 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA 3
  • Death: 29 SEP 1666 1
  • Event: Bullet 1638 IMMIGRANT on "Confidence"
  • Note:
Thomas and Jane are shown to be married in Massachusetts, but they definitely were on the "Confidence" arriving in 1638. Therefore they were probably married in England. Apparently many marriages from England show up in the "New England Marriages" book, based on the birth or baptism of a child in New England.

    ----------------

Also, Sudbury Archives states that Jane died 15 Jul 1666, as a widow, which means that Thomas died earlier than the date given by New England Marriages. In fact on 29 Mar 1665 there is a Sudbury document with a reference to land bordered by that of the "Widdow Goodenow", whom the name index for The Sudbury Archives identified as Jane Goodnow (there were other "Widdow Goodenow"s around about this time). As there is no death record given by The Sudbury Archives (perhaps because he died in Marlborough), "bef. 29 Mar 1665" would be the closest to such a death date. "Thomas Goodenow" is mentioned in a town meeting 17 Feb 1661/2, which is the last reference to him in Sudbury.

The following is copied from the website entitled
"MARLBOROUGH MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL LISTINGS and PICTURES 1660 - 1910",
John Buczek - web master, http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~historyofmarlborough/:

    DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS GOODENOW
This name was common in Sudbury, Massachusetts from the first Edmund, John, and Thomas, supposed to be brothers, were made freemen there in 1640, 1641, and 1643, respectively.

1 THOMAS GOODENOW was a proprietor of Sud. 1638. He m. Ist, Jane, by whom he had his children, and 2d, Joanna. His will, proved 1664, names his brother Edmund, and John Ruddocke. He petitioned for Marl. 1656, was there at the incorporation, and was one of the selectmen in 1661, '62 and '64. His house lot was bounded on the north and west by a highway, on the south by the house lot of Joseph Rice, on the eastward by the Indian Hill, or line of the Indian Planting Field. The record of the family is incomplete.

    1 - 2 Thomas, b. in Sud. ; d. in Marl. Oct. 5, 1663.
    1 - 3 Mary, b. in Sud. Aug. 25, 1640.
    1 - 4 Abigail, born March 11, 1642; m. Thomas Barnes, of Marl.
    1 - 5 Susanna, b. Feb. 20, 1643 ; d. young.
    1 - 6 Sarah, b. Jan. 20, 1644; d. 1654.
    1 - 7 Samuel, b. Feb. 28, 1646 ; m. Mary -.
    1 - 8 Susauna, b. Dec. 21, 1647.

Note: Thus it looks like Thomas was involved in Marlborough at his death sometime in 1664. The Sudbury Archives would disagree with him having a 2nd wife named Joanna, as they indicate that Jane survived him. The existence of a son Thomas who died probably just before father Thomas undoubtedly leads to some confusion over when wives became widows, remarried, etc.
