  • ID: I00127
  • Name: John WHITCOMB
  • Sex: M
  • ALIA: John /Whetcombe/
  • Birth: ABT 1568 in London, Middlesex, England
  • Death: 1648 in Sherbourne, Dorset, England
  • Note:
The marriage date of John and Ann is somewhat of a mystery to me. In my files I originally had the 1584 date with the sources that I have for the 1620 date. I received the following e-mail from an Al Whitcomb:

"I am interested in your entry in Ancestry World Tree for John Whitcomb and particularly the marriage date of 23 Jun 1584. I am not familiar with the reference US/International Marriage Records. Do you have the publisher's name and date or ISBN number? Does this book give the source of the marriage record ie church, parish, or the parents, etc.? Most of the other entries for John give the wedding date as June 1620 which seems improbable and definitely does not tie with John and Ann being the parents of John of John and Francis." Note-I have not been able to reach Al Whitcomb via return e-mail.

After checking I found that I had taken the date and sources electronically from a World Family Tree lineage numbered "v3t6390.wft". When you copy something, my computer program automatically copies any source information along with it. I checked out what the sources were--the "Yates Publication Archive" is available online and the "US/International Marriage Records 1340-1980" is an online data base available at www.freegenelogylookups.com. The real mystery began when I checked the two sources and both came up with a 1620 date. So where did the 1584 date come from?

By the way, I copied this information electronically early in my computerized genealogy project. I soon quit the practice for obvious reasons. One ends up with a lot of unknown material in one's files, some of which is pretty much like garbage that takes a long time to clean up afterwards.

The same sources that give a 1620 marriage date, have 1558 and 1563 as the birth dates of John and Ann, with 1588 as the birth date of their son John. 1620 would be more like a death date for Ann at age 57. If accurate, then the marriage must have occurred almost 40 years after they started an out of wedlock affair.

For this reason, I reset the sourced marriage date back to 1620 and left my 1584 date as the preferred marriage date, even though I do not know where it came from.
I do notice that Glenna Inglis, data base = glenna_inglis in World Connect has the same marriage date.
