July 5, 1780 , enlisted from Rutland, Mass. in Captain Pray's Company, Colonel Shepherd's Regiment, Mass. Continental Line. "Age 18years; stature 5' 4", ; complexion dark." Attached to General LaFayette's Division. Went first to west point. Then marched into New Jersey. Was at Morristown and Trenton, but most of the time on the march. Returned to West Point and was discharged there Dec. 6, 1780.

On his way home after this discharge, at Barre, MA, re-enlisted in the Continental service for 3 years. Joined the Army in Newburg, NY. At first in Capt. Joshua Benton's Company. Afterwards in Capt. Pray's Company, and several others. Was most of the time at West Point, or in the neighborhood of New York City, or in New Jersey. Discharged in March, 1783.

Came to Parkersfield probably about 1792, and finally settled on what was subsequently know as the " Bridge" place near the middle of Roxbury. Died in Roxbury June 10, 1840.

Gideon didn't have a stone. But he was found. The government is giving him a stone.

    ****************************************

The following was taken from a deposition signed by witnesses in order for Gideon to get soldier's pension, which was approved:

"Enlisted in 1780 at Rutland, MA, served Capt Pray/Pry, under Col Shepherd, under Gen Poor, who died while Gideon was in service. Discharged at West Point, 1 Jan 1781. Re-enlisted at Barre, MA for 3 years under Capt Joshua Benton some of the time, but mostly in the company he was in before. Discharged at Newburg, NY in March 1783. Mostly served at West Point, New Jersey, and New York near New York City. He lived in Rutland, MA during the Revolution. A pass giving Gideon permission to pass through the lines on his way to Rutland, signed by Capt Joshua Benson, 5th Massachusetts regiment, is on file. Gideon, aged 84, lived in Roxbury, NH with Benjamin Foster in 1840. Gideon is not to be confused with another Gideon from Springhfield, MA b. 12 Dec 1746, or one from Connecticut. Supposedly these 3 are the only Gideon Phillips who served."

    3. Title: Phillips Family Bible, printed 1831, owned by Miss Beverly K Marston of Keene, NH
Note: Not sure who it belonged to but it is probably Reuben and Rebecca's since it has both their parents and their children in it-all in the same handwriting. After Lestina's birth (their child), the hand writing changes for two more children, probably their grandchildren-not of Joseph since the names do not match his children.

      Text: Signed by 2 witnesses.

Text: gives Reuben as a son (as well as others), died on 13 June 1840.
    6. Title: Letter from Town Clerk of Hubbardston Concerning Marriage of Gideon & Chloe
Text: by the Reverend Nehimiah Parker. They had 9 children.
