  • Note:
The existence of a first Mrs Kirk comes from family stories, which may or not be true. The story is that William Riley's first wife had died between Tennessee and Missouri, and William was told to find a wife before starting out on the trail to Oregon, because he would not find one there. Supposedly he found Sarah (Eads) within a week before leaving for Oregon. Someone on the internet stated that Sarah's tombstone stated she was William Riley Kirk's 2nd wife, but I have now seen the tombstone and it names her simply as his wife, so there is no proof of a previous wife.

William & Sarah were m. 19 May 1846 in Missouri, and had to have left immediately for Oregon. It must have been a hard trip for Sarah due to her pregnancy. Their son George Washington Kirk was born in Linn Co., Oregon Territory, 17 Jan 1847, 2 days short of 8 months after the wedding. The family story mentioned above seems to be true about their marrying within a week before leaving for Oregon, but they seem to have known each other a bit longer than a week before that.

Sarah was daughter of Jesse J. Eads & Elizabeth Mueller of Cole County, MO.

Julia Burden, William Riley's next wife, had a brother Levi Burden, who m. Sarah Eads, b. abt 1833, daughter of Solomon Eads and Susannah Collet of Cole Co, Missouri. The fathers of the two Sarah Eads must have been related.

    -------------------------

Laura Francis, who wrote to me about Sarah Eads (wife of Levi Burden & daughter of Solomon Eads of Cole co, MO) in a separate e-mail confirmed that the fathers of the two Sarahs were brothers.

You are right about Jesse J. Eads and Solomon Eads. They are the sons of Isaac Eads and Sarah White. My mom and I believe that Isaac was born in TN but have not proven this. Isaac married Sarah 4 Jan 1792 in Kentucky. I know that Solomon and his brother Moses went west on the 2nd train to use the Oregon Trail. They were written about in Mr.. Gilliam's diary (I think his name was that.....can you believe I forgot to write it down in my notes). Mr.. Gilliam was the brother to Abram Collet's second wife and he lead the train.
