  • ID: I826
  • Name: John Walker Sr.
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: BEF 1766 in England
  • Death: by 1820 in Greenup Co., KY (?)
  • Note:
Note: According to the 1810 census of Greenup Co., KY, John Walker wasat that time
age 45 or over. This would place his date of birth as before1766. The 1880 census entry for John Walker, Jr. (Carter Co.,KY, Pct. 6) shows that his father, John Walker, Sr., was born inEngland.

Conflicting family traditions indicate that John Walkerimmigrated first to either PA or NC before settling in KY. Thename "John Walker" was not uncommon in early KY. There was aJohn Walker who was a surveyor of part of the large Grayson landgrant in eastern KY in the 1780s. The name John Walker alsoappears on early KY tax lists.

The first definite record of our John Walker is the record ofhis marriage to Rachel McCord in Greenup Co., KY on 23 February,1804. Greenup County was formed in 1803 from Mason Co., KY, andthe Walker-McCord marriage was the first marriage on record forthe newly formed county.

John Walker appears to have had some service in the War of 1812.His name appears as a private on the list of soldiers from theGreenup County area in Lt. (later Col.) Robert Poage's 4thRegiment of Kentucky Volunteers. Some portion of the 4thRegiment under Lt. Poage served at the famous Battle of Thameson 5 October, 1813, when the Indian leader, Tecumseh, waskilled. John Walker also served as a captain of a GreenupCounty company of infantry of the detached Kentucky militia forsix months from 4 March, 1813 until 4 October, 1813.

John Walker died by the time of the 1820 census of GreenupCounty, when Rachel Walker is listed as the head of household. His widow, Rachel (McCord) Walker, survived him by over 30years. Although she was only in her mid-30s at the time of JohnWalker's death, she apparently never remarried Rachel is lastfound in the 1850 census of Carter Co., KY, and apparently diedprior to 1860.

An estimation of the children of John and Rachel (McCord) Walkercan be made by a careful examination of the 1810, 1820, and 1830census entries for this family in Greenup County. Based onthese census records, it is believed that they had the followingchildren*:

    (1) daughter, born 1800-1810 (not in household in 1820, sopossibly died young or
    married by 1820)
    (2) son, born 1800-1804
    (3) son, born 1800-1804
    (4) son, born 1804-1810 (probably Jacob Walker)
    (5) John Walker, Jr. born about 1808
    (6) daughter, born 1804-1810
    (7) son, born 1810-1820
    (8) Jeremiah Walker born 6 September, 1812
    (9) daughter, born 1810-1815
    (10) son, born 1810-1820
    (11) daughter, born 1815-1820

    * In the 1810 census, there is also a male in the household age10 to 15 (born 1794-1800). This male also appears in RachelWalker's household in the 1820 census. Since this person wasborn four or more years before John Walker and Rachel McCordwere married, this could be a son of John by a previous marriage
OR some other relative. This could possibly be the RobertWalker, who married Margaret Deering on 10 July, 1828 in GreenupCounty. According to his descendants, this Robert Walker wasborn on 5 April, 1798, and so he would be the same age as themale found in John Walker's household.
