  • Note:
    From Ric Hoover, Galloway researcher
Martha built a house between 1906-1907 at 1310 Central Avenue, Harper, Harper County, KS. This house was placed on the KS State Historical Register in 1990. The file at the KS Historical Society, Preservation Section indicated it was placed on the
Historical Register because of its period Queen Ane architecture with gabled roof, leaded and beveled, stained glass windows. The foundation was of imported Vermont granite. The builder was Fred Stearman, father of Lloyd Stearman who was the first
president of Stearman Aircraft that became Boeing. The file had a history of the owners of the house from Martha Kiefer to the present ones who restored the house. Martha sold it in 1917. Photographs were in the file. One was a front view of the house
in 1908-1909. Another one was a front view in 1917 with Martha standing on the front porch. Note she was also at the front door in a photograph of her sod house in the late 1880's in Sherman County, KS. A copy of the nomination application, photographs
(inside and exterior), and newspaper articles in possession of Ric Hoover. Martha lived diagonally across the street from 1310 Central Avenue while the house was being built. It is believed that a portion of that residence was still standing in Harper,
KS as of 2004. She also lived at 1503 Shington Street in harper, KS at one time.
  • Note:
A family bible was mentioned by Martha during a July 1933 interview of her for information regarding her husband, Robert Morris Kiefer, by the local DAR chapter in Harper County, KS. It was cited as a source of documentation for information she
provided. Martha indicated that she had possession of the bible that was originally belonged to Robert and Phebe Galloway of Harmony, NJ, her parents. It was published in 1851 by American Bible Society of NY. A check of Martha's will and inventory at
the Harper County, KS courthouse did not reveal the specific mention of any bible in her possessions to be passed on to any of her relatives. If it existed at the time of her death, it was most likely included in "all other personal property". Since
her sons preceded her in death, it most likely went to one of the daughter-in-laws Kathryn who had no children; or Neta who remarried to an unknown Hertz. Neta moved to OK after her husband's death and married the unknown Hertz. Supposedly she died
there with no identified relatives. Neta had two sons with Frank Kiefer -Robert who died 1980 and Edward Earl. Robert had a son named Dennis who in 2004 lived in TN. Dennis was did not have any knowledge of the bible when queried in July 2004.
  • Note:
Martha's will in Harper County, KS was # 3056, Docket G, Page 134. It listed as relatives the following: Louis H. Kiefer of Harper, KS; Robert Franklin, grandson in LA; Edward Earl, Dallas, TX, grandson; Neta Hertz, daughter-in-law, Dallas, TX; and
