  • ID: I762
  • Name: Martha Rebecca FISHER
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: DEC 23 1833 in W Amwell Twp, Hunterdon Co NJ
  • Death: JUL 29 1908
  • Burial: Amwell Ridge Cem, Ringoes, Hunterdon NJ
  • Reference Number: B-4-2-4-4-5-3
  • Note:
In 1860 Charles Johnson (listed as Chas) 28 and his wife Martha 26 are living in the household of James J. Fisher, 75, with their children Sarah 4 and Fisher 3, everyone b NJ. There were also 2 laborers and 1 servant (JOHNSON CHAS 28 M W NJ NJ
HUNTERDON DELAWARE TWP 1860; Series: M653 Roll: 695 Page: 343). Next door was a family named Fisher: Cornelius T 61, Gertrude 57, Mariah 29, Harriet 21, and James 19 .
  • Note:
In 1870 Charles 38 and Martha R 36 are in Sergeantsville with all the children are listed: Sarah F 15, Fisher 13, Rebecca F 10, Mary F 7, George 5, and Ulysis [sic] 2, everone b NJ. They are living in the home of Johnson Fisher age 86, who is probably
the James J. Fisher noted in 1860, relatonship not stated (JOHNSON CHARLES 38 M W NJ NJ HUNTERDON DELAWARE TWP 1870; Series: M593 Roll: 869 Page: 161).
  • Note:
Disease struck the family in 1877 as noted in the Hunterdon Democrat (Nov. 20, 1877, Vol. XL - No. 13, Whole No. 2036 ) "In West Amwell township, at 2:30 P.M., Nov. 14, of diphtheria, Rebecca F. Johnson, in the 18th year of her age; at 9:30 P.M., same
day, of same disease, Mary Lizzie Johnson, in the 15th year of her age; daughters of Charles and Martha R. Johnson," and again (December 4, 1877, Vol. XL - No. 15, Whole No. 2038) " A week or two since we mentioned the death, from diphtheria, of two
daughters of Charles and Martha Johnson, of West Amwell township, both deaths occurring on the same day. On Wednesday last, these sorely afflicted parents lost a ten year old son from the same disease. ."
  • Note: Martha and Charles are found in 1880 with sons Fisher and George at home, and grandson Holcombe Johnson and uncle Peter Phillips (JOHNSON CHARLES 48 W NJ NJ HUNTERDON WEST AMWELL TWP 1880; Series: T9 Roll: 787 Page: 192).
  • Note: In the 1885 census of NJ is the Johnson household of Charles, Martha, George, and Holcombe (1885 NJ West Amwell, Hunterdon, New Jersey; New Jersey, State Census, 1885," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/6TLS-LT2).

  • Note:
In 1900 Martha is widowed (JOHNSON MARTHA R 67 F W NJ NJ HUNTERDON 2-WD LAMBERTVILLE 1900; Series: T623 Roll: 981 Page: 180). She is then living with her widowed daughter, Sarah F. Holcombe and Holcombe G. Johnson, b Jan 1877, listed as
son, but who should be her grandson as noted in 1880; but that is somewhat uncertain and he could be an out of wedlock child born to one of the daughters who died in late 1877, or a very unlikely late child of her own not otherwise listed and not in
McPherson. How he is related is to be developed.
  • Note:
Of further note on Holcombe G Johnson is the fact that on Sep 12 1918 Holcombe Graham Johnson b 9 Jan 1877 of Washington DC registered for the WW I draft and noted his nearest relative as Lillian C Johnson (World War I Draft Registration Cards,
