    OBIT-

    The Death of Isaac Bowlus
    The Way It Came
Its Suddenness and Awfulness all go to Make it a Sad Affair

A good man has fallen, struck down so quickly, as to bring again fresh to our mind the saying "In the midst of life we are in death." Mr. Bowlus had come to town on Wednesday afternoon, his wife accompanying; he was not well, had been quite sick, and was so feeble as to be barely able to get into his buggy.
He was about town for half an hour or more, then started to the railroad to get his mail, passed by the post office, got his mail, then turned north on the street and had got just on to the street coming from the railroad. As he was crossing into that street, a team of Mr. Wagoner's came down the street at a furious speed, running away, and when Mr. Bowlus saw it, he got out and went to his horses' heads and attempted to turn them out of the street into which they were just entering; and while there the running team dashed by him, the wagon striking him on the hip and ribs. He was knocked down and bruised badly, not made insensible though, we believe. He was taken to the residence of Prof. Oreat and cared for with every possible att ention.

Isaac Bowlus was named as a trustee of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Middletown 28 May 1853 (History of Middletown, p. 110).

From Rob Roy Ratliff, 608 Warfield Drive, Rockville, MD 20850-1922, (301) 424-8523 -- Under the headline "Sad Affair," the Warren Ledger (Williamsport IN 18 Oct 1871) reported the accidental death of Isaac Bowlus. He and his wife had come to town "Wednesday afternoon... he was not well, had been quite sick, and was so feeble as to be scarcely able to get into his buggy." A runaway team was approaching and Mr. Bowlus got out and tried to turn his horses out of the way but the runaway wagon struck him on the hip and ribs and knocked him down. He was taken to the residence of Prof. Oscar and Drs.
Boyer, Tebbs and Campbell "gave all aid within their power." He was injured at 5 pm and "laid until 11" allowing his children to join his wife to hear his parting words: " 'follow on after me.' Noble words, words of a man of God."OBIT-[bowlus-tree.FTW]
