OBITUARY -- MRS. SARAH M'GRUDER Bowlus - Warren Republican (Williamsport IN, 14 Sep 1882)

The subject of this sketch was born in Frederick County, Maryland, May 12th, 1821, and departed this life Friday, Septembr 8th, 1882, aged 61 years, 3 months and 6 days. She was united in marriage to Isaac Bowlus January 24th, 1839, and removed to Warren County, IN, with her husband, in the year 1847. She was the mother of 12 children, 9 of whom are living and were present at her death and funeral. In her early youth she became a member of the Lutheran Church, but after her marriage she and her husband joined the Methodist Church, of which society she remained a consistent member until her death. She was left a widow October 18th, 1871, her husband's death being caused by the running away of his team in Williamsport. Deceased was taken ill on the 20th of last August and after a painful illness of two weeks became calm and quiet, for the last few days of her life her pain and sufferings all seeming to have passed away. She was perfectly resigned and at exactly 12 o'clock M., surrounded by her children, calmly fell asleep in death. She leaves behind a large family and many loving friends to mourn her loss: Reverdy I. Bowlus, Charles M., Abraham, Wm. W., Mrs. Emily Wilson, Misses Laura and Carrie, all reside in this county. Mrs. Elizabeth Nowls, and George C. Bowlus reside in Kansas. Five of the children are or have been married.

Rev. L.S. Buckles, of this place, preached the funeral sermon last Sabbath morning at 11 o'clock at the residence, after which the remains were interred in the West Lebanon cemetery by the side of her husband. A very large concourse of friends of the family followed the remains to their last resting place.

Sarah's granddaughter, Georgia Glenyce Bowlus Hulbert, remembers her mother speaking of Uncle Ezakiah (her pronunciation). Also, she says the story was that Sarah had never brushed her own hair until she was married.

Another story was that she had been given a gift of two slaves by her father, who was a brewer. Her husband immediately freed them on their marriage, but they stayed with the family - the male, James Galloway, moving with them to Indiana. The female refused to cross the Ohio and returned to Maryland.

In settlement of father, John Rezin Magruder, estate (intestate), Elias Magruder (son) and Edward L. Boteler, administrators, 28 Jan 1833, payments were made to Widow Susan ($205.55) and to each child ($58.73 each) - Elias, Henry, Samuel, Arthur, Hezekiah, Elizabeth Catherine, and Sarah Ann Maria.
