    Dear Barbara and Naomi,

Please forgive the informal salutation of my letter, but sincewe'reMaybe cousins I thoug h t you would not mind.

My name is George Kobernus. My father was born in 1898 inAustin,Illinoisto Henry (Earl) Kob e rnus and Helen Jacoby. Helen'sparents were LeopoldJacoby and Augusta Frase. My father le f t theAustin/Oak Park area forCalifornia in the 1920's and apparently had nofurther conta c t with hisfamily so I have almost no knowledge of myJacoby history.
I've been able to trace my grandfather's family from MecklenburgGermanyto Oak Park Illino i s where they immigrated in 1875 and recently Ibegantrying to learn more about the famil y o f my maternal grandmotherHelen. Here is what I know about the Jacoby family
Helen's father, Leopold Jacoby, is buried in the family plot inConcordiaCemetery and ma y b e the same Leopold Jacoby listed on thepassengermanifest of the ship "Gellert" from Schoe nfe ld Germany in Aprilof 1882.The passenger record indicates he was traveling alone. So, h e may havemarried Augusta after his arrival in the US. Or, as was common inthosedays, he ma y hav e sent for his family after he was settled inChicago.
This is the 1900 census entry for the Jacoby family. :
    Residence 5959 IA St,
Jacoby, Leopold Age 53 (1847) born Germany
Augusta, born. Jan 1853, Age 41, born Germany
Marta, born. Sept 1877, Age 22, bornIllinois
Amanda, born. Mar 1886, Age 14, bornIllinois

I've been told my grandmother Helen, (Oct 1877-Jan 1921), was borninBerlin, and the 1920 ce n sus indicates she emigrated from Germany in1881.There are several Schoenfeld's in Germany ; o ne is in Brandenburgnot farfrom Berlin
It appears Leopold and Augusta may had at least three or more daughters
Clara Amelia (1872-1932) Married Anton Milkau 1895
Helen (1877-1921) Married Henry Kobernus in 1894
    Amanda (1886-1909) Married Frank Kerrigan
    Other possible Children:
The "Marta" listed in the 1900 census could be another daughter butherSept 1877 birth dat e i ndicates she may have been a cousin?
"Tillie" Mentioned by both Clare Milkau Werking and Barbara King.

I have corresponded with Clare who is descended from Clara AmeliaJacoby. She remembers an Au n t "Tillie" who babysat for her parents. Shealso hasmemories of visiting her Aunt Martha a n d Uncle Harry Decker inMason CityIA, and visiting Jacoby relations in MN.
Here are some more "memory ticklers":
1909: At the time of her husband's death Helen Jacoby was living at117Lathrop, Forest Park.

1911:Leopold Jacoby killed March 1911 in an accident at the 40thStreetcar shop yards of t h e C&N.W Railway. Co. His address at that timewas 550N. Park Ave.

1915: Son John age 15, killed in an accident involving overheadelectricalwires. His addre s s was 629 N. Parkside. This is the sameaddress given in1921 as address for Anton Milkau. Cl a re Werking has apicture of "GrandmaJacoby" and "Grandma Milkau" sitting on the steps of62 9 N . Parkside in1915.

1917: At the time of her death, Augusta Jacoby was living at 623 N.WallerOak ParkIllinois

1919-21: The 1919 Directory gives address for Helen as 657 N.Parkside,Austin Area of Chicag o . The 1920 Census give the same addressfor Helenand her son Emil age 22. She was living the r e at time of herdeath in1921.

My goal is to gain a better understanding of the Jacoby family tree.Anyhelp in sorting ou t t he Jacoby family tree will be appreciated. Ihave anumber of questions, but here is a coup l e for starters. Forexample, whois the Marta (Martha?) listed in the 1900 Census? Do you hav e anyknowledge of "Tillie" and what was her relationship to the Jacobyfamily?
Do you have any knowledge of the MN Jacoby families that Clarementions?
Thanks for taking the time to consider this letter. Any informationyouhave about the Jaco b y family will be appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    George M. Kobernus
