The birth dates I got from my aunt who is in her 80s, but I started
collecting them twenty years ago for my grandmother's 90th birtday party
(we did a book about the family with pictures). I am certain that theyare
    correct.

    Here are their complete birthdates:

Bertha 5/13/1873 (Church record says Bertha Carolina Maria)
Augusta Ana Maria 8/14/1875 (Church record says Auguste Sophia Luise)
    Wilhemina 12/27/1877
    Freda 7/17/1880
    Charles Henry 5/22/1883
    William John 7/3/1885
    Fred 11/1/1887
    Anna 7/8/1890

I am also positive of my grandfather's birth place(theinformationcamefromthe same au n t . ) I agree with you that my familyisthe one thatcameoveron the "Trave." I spent par t o f t h i s eveninggoingovertheinformationon your web pages. I would like to getcollaborati onf r o mGermany on thebirth dates, but I
don't know how to go about it.

    Theresa,

I've been reviewing the Kubbernuss database and realizedthatmaybewecanflesh it ou t a l i t t le more. With your help weverifiedthatyourfamilycame from Levin, Mecklenburg on t he T r a v e in1888.Irecentlylearnedthat my ancestor Carl used both KubbernussandKobernussdur i n g h is lifeand was born in Alt-Gaarz which is about20miles fromLevin. The greatestconcent r a t i on of Kubbernuss familiesI'vefound isinKüsserow onlyabout 5 miles from Levin. My g u e s s i sthatbecausethename is so rareour families are related but it will takealittlemo r e w or k to verifythat.

There are a couple of options:

    1. Do the research yourself. This should be pretty easysinceyouknowhisexact birthda t e . J F TK was either born in Levin oravillagecloseby. Ifyou have an LDS library close b y y o u c a n lookitupyourself.It's prettyeasy. The film normally takes about 2 weekstoarriv e a nd cost s $3.50and you can keep it for a month withoutarenewalcharge.This is the data o n t h e LDS f ilm. There appear to betwofilmno's,0069395 & 1348513.

Option 2: Have someone do the research for you. Irecentlyaskedaresearcherin Schwe r i n t o h elp me find mygreatgrandfather'shomevillage. Eventually I'd like to be able to identify the family lines ofallofthe25Kobernuss/Kub b e r n uss immigrants from 1863-1888. This iswhatIhaveonyour family so far. Would you be wi l l i n g to add your datato it?

    George,
Sorry it took me so long to answer, but I was finishing up my class at the
University this last week. I am free for the next couple of months.

I am very interested in doing further research on the Kubbernus side ofthe
family. Through you I have contacted Rick Kubbernus (he is a cousin by
adoption and his family is doing research into the family). I think that
most of it will have to be done in Germany, since my grandfather was born
there, only his youngest sister was born in the states, but we can't finda
birth certificate for her. How do I go about finding someone to do my
research in Germay? I am hoping to be able to go to England in the next
two years (my niece will be there) and do research on the other side of my
    family.

You should separate the problem into two categories:USresearchandGermanresearch.

The best US research starting point is the US Censusdata.Thestepsgosomething like this:

    1. Order the Soundex for the states where your familylivedin1880,1900,1910 and 192 0 . S i nc e spelling of surnames hasatendencytochange overtime, the soundex system is ind e x th a t lu mpsallthesimilarsoundingnames together. For example,Kobernus,Kobernuss,Kuber n uss, Kubbernus sall have the same Soundex codeof K165.Since Idon't knowwhat librarysourc e s a r e availabl e in yourlocal area,I canwalk youthrough theprocess when I know more abo u t yo ur locallibra rysituation.

    2. Since we already know the birthdates and likelybirthvillageofyourgrandparents, Ge r . m a n research should be fairlyeasy. You haveacoupleof options here.

    a) Order the film for Levin through your locallibrary/ortheMormonFamilyHistory Cent e r ( s e e my last e-mail for filmnumbers). Itryto domy ownresearch because it's cheaper a n d I l e a rnmore.

    b) Sometimes a professional is quicker and I sometimesgetstuckorcan'tdecipher a rec o r d . T he researcher I used recentlychargesDM50anhour. Two hours in the Schwerin archi v e s c ost m e $55.00but Igotalotfor the money. You just e-mail him what you already know , gi v ehima"don ot exceed" figure (I recommend 2 hours Max) , He'llgototheSchwerinarchive s w h e re the chur ch books for Mecklenburgarekeptandhe'll sendthe info back by e-mail.

Since the Kubbernuss name is fairly rare and we have lotsofdataonpeoplein the villa g e s t h e Malchin area, it is likely we'llbeabletotie manyof the families together eventu a l l y . IhavebeenrecordingeveryKobernus and Kubbernuss I've come across inmyresearch s o , i tispossible I already have some data on your family.Myguess isthatourfamilies ar e r e l at ed in some way since the villagesofourancestorsarefairly close together and my gre a t g r an dfatherusedthenameKubbernusswhen he Maybe Germany.
