I was looking at the data you posted to ancestry.com this morning and I
may have some hints/clues for you if your interested.
I have in my file a Herman Schierholz who I just started researching.
According to census data and cemeterty records, he was born in Prussia
16 Mar 1842 and died in Lansing, Allamakee, Iowa on 30 Sep 1913. I
don't have a fathers or mothers name yet. I have traced him through his
wife, Florence Madeline Shaw (she went by Mattie F) who was born on 24
Jan 1848 in Butternuts, Otsego, New York to Samuel Valentine and Alice
Adelia (Rockwell) Shaw. She died on 7 Jan 1936 in Lansing. They are
both buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Herman served in the Civil War
for Co H from MO 27th Infantry C-112. He was on the Union side during
There are not very many Schierholz in Iowa at that time frame (according
to the census indexes). It is possible that Herman is the same as the
Herman you posted online, however, I think we would need to find them on
a census being enumerated together to prove the family relationship.
Especially if the older children were born in Prussia (Germany). On
the 1860 census there is an H.H. Schierholz living in Clayton Co. in
Garnavillo Twp. I haven't looked this guy up yet, I ran out of time the
last time I went to the library. Or perhaps MO holds the answer since
that is where my Herman entered the war from.
I hope these "clues" are useful to you and that I haven't jumped to
