  • Reference Number: 68
  • Note:

    Ship "Saxonia" Hamburg--New York 18.11.1863 - 07.12.1863
Filby uses "Kobermuss" Kobernuss, Christian (b. Abt 1818) (1814?)
Maria (b. About 1824) (Sophia buried in Samem Cem ??
    Wilhelmena (b. Abt 1841)
    Maria (b. About 1844)

Note: Family departed from Bolz, Sternburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, ZIP19406. Traveled with t he Christian Kobernuss b. 1829 (Maybe a son actually born 1839) on the same voyage. No subsequent record of wife Maria. A Sophia Kobernus b. 1831 is buried next to Christian in Salem Cemetery in Tonawanda. Daughters Wilhemenia and Maria are mentioned in the 1890 Erie County will of Christian CobernusSr. (1814-1890) who died in North Tonawandwa New York. This Christian Cobernus is buried in Salem Cemetery. A Christian Cobernusz who applied for naturalization in Erie County New York in June 1873 is Maybe either Christian Sr. (b.1814) or Christian Jr . ( b. 1838 (9? .Maybe the father of Christian Cobernus (1839-1911) who lived on Grand Island New York for 46 years and is buried in Nice Cemetery, Grand Island. Descendants of Christian Kobernus have been identified in Tonawanda NewYork. Court records and Obits for the family of Christian Cobernus spell his name variously as "Kobernmuz" , "Kobernauz" and "Kobarnus " Source:" Germans to America "Vol 15, pg 145. LDS 0472894.

1873: Immigration papers on Christian "Cobernesz "discovered in Erie County courthouse in 1996 and maybe filmed by LDS under naturalization records. Since neither Christian Senior or Chris tian Jr. could read or write english, this naturalization record could belong to either of them .
Immigration Data: State of New York, Erie County Application Date: 2 June 1873, Pg 397, Book 29, Erie County Court Declaration Date: 2 June 1873, Pg 18, Book 6 Superior Court. Witness: Joseph R. Holway and Nicholas R. Acker Sworn Date: Oct 25, 1877 Signed Application with an "X" which indicates little or no education, thus the spelling of his name is suspect. Could be one of several Christian Kobernuss listed on various ships in Filby's Germans to America.

1890 Tonawanda Daily Herald, Nov 24, 1890. Obit is very brief. Obit say she is Buried in Cemetery on Military Road/CityCemetery, Tonawanda, NY. Actually buried in the adjacent Salem Church Cemetery on Main Street in Tonawanda, NY. Will is very brief. Bill for headstone in will records and bills for transportation between GrandIsland and Tonawanda. That checks with census of 1900 and 1910 that reflects father lived with son Christian on Grand Island. - Obit spells name as Chris Kobermuz. Found Tonawanda Herald Ad dated Mar 17, 1891 in courhouse will papers that spelled name as Kobernauz. This ad advised the public to notify son, Christian, of any debts. Will papers spelled name as Kobarnus. Obit says he arrived on Grand Island in 1864. It is likely this is the Christian Kobernuss (b.1814) who arrived on the Saxonia Dec 4,1863

1890 - Surrogate Court, Case # 12566, Nov 25, 1890. Letter of Test. lbr 16, pg 8; Will Lbr40, p426, Decree lbr 51,p167.File in Surrogate court has lots of papers on his estate, bills etc.

Mentioned in Will: Daughter: Minnie (Wilhelmina) Holling (Halling?) Donner Tonawanda, grandson Hinckle,Step Child Minnie Donner, Sophia Kleeman (sp)/Cramer? ,WIlliam Ludke of Chicago (spelling of this name looks like Lickke or something. Mary Ludke (Granddaughter?) of Chicago is mentioned.
