    Rev. Stephen Bordley, Sr. (1637-1695)

    He was the son of William Bordley (1605-1669) Headmaster of Hawkshead Grammar School, and Susanna Smithies of Tunstall, Lancs., his wife, Christened at Tunstall 1 Jan 1636/7. He was educated at Hawkshead School. Matriculated 1654 at Christ?s College, Cambridge; B.A. 1657; M.A. 1661; Ordained Deacon at Lincoln Cathedral 24 March 1660/1; Ordained a priest at Durham Cathedral Sept. 1661. He was curate at Ryton, Durham until 1664 when he was Vicar until 1689 at St. Hilda?s, South Shields, Durham on the east coast of England below Newcastle upon Tyne. He was Rector of St. Mary?s Newington Surrey 1689-1698 and Prebendary (Willesden) of St. Pauls Cathedral, London. He died 1695 and was buried at St. Marys. Administration of Prerogative Court of Canterbury 30 Sept. 1695.

    Rev. Stephen married c.1660 Margaret Colston (c.1640-1720) the daughter of William Colston (c.1600-post 1650) of Newcastle, a Royalist, (see Surtees Soc CXI, p. 173) and corrections at cover) and Margaret Proctor, of Cuthbert of Newcastle (the Gt. Gt. Grandson of Geoffrey Proctor of Nether Bordley, W. Yorks.) (see Northumberland County History, Edw. Bateson Vol 2, P. 192). They had seven children. Of their four sons, William (1671- ) was blind; John (1681- ) married and had issue (see Register, All Saints Newcastle upon Tyne); Rev. Stephen Jr. 1674-1709 was sent to Maryland 1696 by Henry Compton, Bishop of London and appointed to St. Pauls, Kent County by Gov. Francis Nicholson. He married Ann Hynson, of Col. John of Kent Co., Md., and had issue; Hon. Thomas Bordley (1677-1726) studied law, went with his brother Rev. Stephen to Md, there became a famous lawyer and Attorney General of Md. He married twice (see chart) and had issue by each). He died on a voyage to London for an operation and was buried near his father at St. Marys. (Margaret Colston Bordley?s will of 1718, Pro. Newcastle 1720 is at Dept. of Palaeography and Diplomatic, Univ. of Durham.
