    One of the first settlers in Bermuda

    In 1616, he was sent to Bermuda under the Bermuda Company. He conducted a survey of Bermuda in 1616 and his amp waspublished in London in 1622. He returned to England from 1622 to 1636 where he married his wife in 1622. Between 1633 and 1635, he measured, partly by chain and partly by pacing, the distance between London and York. Also, he calculated the difference in latitude between these two cities and calculated the length of the meridian. With the outbreak of the Civil War in England, he returned to Bermuda where he was employed by the Bermuda Company as a surveyor. He completed a survey of the entire island betwwn 1661 and 1663. For many years, he kept the public school inn Bermuda. Later, he owned and lived on property in Pembroke parish, now known as Norwood.

    In 1623, he patented land in Virginia but apparently never went to Virginia.

    He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society shortly after its founding by King Charles II. He published several highly regarded mathematical and scientific works.
