A Brief History of the Methodist Church in Centreville, Maryland
Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Dedication of the present House of Worship
Methodism in Centreville has its origin a society which met in the home of Colonel William Hopper
This year on June 6th Elizabeth Nicholson, for the sum of "12 pounds and 15 shillings" deeded the lot on which the present Epsworth Church stands to Thomas Wright, Alexander Warfield, William Bruff, Ephraim Story, William Grant, John Chaires, John Brown, son of Nathan, Philip Feddeman, and William Hopper. The original deed is now in the State Archives Building in Annapolis and a photostatic copy is in the custody of the present trustees of Epworth.
The first building of fram construction was erected in 1794, the year in which the present Court House was finished. Bishop Asbury preached in the frame Church on June 9, 1795; May 12, 1799; May 18, 1801.
A brick Church was built this year. Centreville was still part of Kent Circuit of the Philadelphia Conference with Bishop Asbury as Bishop and the Rev. William Bishop and James Ridgeway as ministers. The presiding Elder was the Rev. James Smith.
