Edward L. Nicholson, resident of Maryland, was admitted to the U.S. Miliatry Academy on August 5, 1814, at the age of fourteen years and seven months. At the time of his admission, his guardian was listed as Edward Lloyd of Annapolis, MD. From the 1817 Proceeding of the Academic Board, in September, 1817, he was assigned to the third (sophomore) class. In June, 1918, he was found proficient in his studies, standing twelfth out of twenty-three members, and proceeded to the Second Class. During th annual examinations held in June, 1819, Nicholson was found deficient in his studies and recommended by the Academic Board to be discharged fromthe Academy. According to the Post Orders records for 1819,Nicholson was granted a leave of absence shortly after the June examinations, until August 28, 1819. According to secondary sources, Nicholson was one of thirty-two cadets who had failed the June examination. The Academic Board reviewed the records of those who had failed, and at the end of August, the cadets were informed by the Academic Board that they would be permitted to resign or would be dischargesd if they did not. According to the Post Orders, on August 30, 1819, it was noted that Nichols's resignation would take effect October 31, 1819. In "A Record of the Progress, Capacity and Habits of Certain Cadets of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, who, at the general Examination in June 1819 have been found unqualified to proceed with their respective classes, and are recommended by the Academic Staff to be discharged", the following ratings were recorded:
