According to Cathy Cramer, Martha (Lowell) Burrows remarried a Knott.

According to D.R. Lowell, Martha married a Strang in Polo, Ogle Co., Illinois.

According to the Illinois Marriage Index it was her sister MARY who married a Strang, and the only Martha married a Bartlett:

  • Note:
Original calculations of Martha Lowell's dates (BET Aug 1838 AND Aug 1839 and BET Sep 1836 AND Mar 1838):

We have only sketchy information regarding Martha Lowell's dates, but it does allow us to place a number of limits on them.

Our first clue is the fact that she was a minor and required her parents written consent when she married Byran Bartlett on September 21, 1854. I haven't yet confirmed what the age of consent was in Illinois in 1854, but it was 14 in the 18th century and 21 by 1905, In 1854 it would have been 16 or 18. If we assume it was 18, then she must have been born after Sep 1836.

Her son WHB was born either 25 JUL 1864 or 25 JUL 1865. His father, Thomas, died at the age of 38 when WHB was 3. This establishes that Thomas was born between July 1828 and Jul 1831 and died between July 1867 and July 1869.

WHB's brothers were born when his mother was 30 and 32. If we set Martha's marriage shortly before her 18th birthday to give her the most ime possible to fit this all in, she is born in late 1836 and her youngest son is born in 1868 the probable year of his father's death. This means the Burrows boys were born in '64, '66 and '68. Their sister Martha could have been squeezed in between two of them, but it seems more likely she was born before WHB, but we don't have a lot of time for a marriage and two full term pregnancies between the birth of Martha's last Bartlett daughter in 61 and WHB.

Juggling the dates as best I can, I get Byran Bartlet dies in 1861, the year of his last child's birth, Martha remarying within a couple of months in early 62 and giving birth to Martha Burrows about a year later in early '63, and WHB 1.5 years later.

Though I have given specific years in the above, I've listed ranges in the GEDCOM file based on the above limits. Both should serve solely as guides for further research.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

The problem with all this is that Byron Bartlett is still alive in 1870, living with his mother and two youngest daughters. Thus, the Martha and Byron either divorced or just split up. (Given Martha's brother Mark's marital antics, we shouldn't rule this out. Also, Martha's son WHB left home at the age of 14, suggesting a somewhat chaotic home life.) [The problem with THAT is that he is listed (as Willie KNOTT) at home in the 1850 census at the age of 15.]

A second problem with all of this continuity is that the best candidate we have for Thomas in the records is much younger than he would be if he died at the age of 38 when WHB was 3.

So far, we have no coherent story.

    • Note:
According to personal papers and family oral history:

William Henry Burrows was born on July 25 1864 (or possibly 1865), probably in Fulton, Illinois. He left home at the age of 14. According to him, his father died at the age of 38 after two years' illness. He did not know the specific cause of death, but listed the general cause as Army life. It seems probable that Thomas served in the Civil War, probably in the Union Army. According to Helen Burrows Carlton, William Henry's daughter, his father "died in the Civil War when WHB was three". This would mean that Thomas was born in about 1829.

William Henry had three siblings--two brothers and a sister. The sister appears to be the oldest. Martha was 30 and 32 when William Henry's brothers were born. If Martha was about the same age as her husband, they would have been born in 1860 and 1862. I'm guessing that the sister was born two years before that. She died at the age of 34.

      Research Notes:
Check the Illinois state library for farm maps for Thomas and Martha Burrows.

According to Gam (Grace Harriet Stull Burrows), William Henry Burrows's father was also William Henry, and was married to a Lowell.

According to Cathy Cramer, W. H. Burrows's father was Thomas Burrows, who was married to Martha Lowell. Martha (Lowell) Burrows remarried a Knott.

The 1890 census for William Henry Burrows list his parents as born in VT.

According to Cathy Cramer, Wm H's grandfather (or more likely his great- grandfather) was the immigrant. He was supposed to have been the eldest son of an Irish Catholic lord who married a Protestant girl and was disowned. The Protestant wife was said to have stood at the manor with babe in arms in hopes of being seen by the Lord. She never was. After a time the son decided to emmigrate to America.

    • Note:
Martha, Thomas and their children's dates are calculated from a number age relationships found in insurance and marriage documents and family tradition.

WHB's birthday is July 25, but the years is given as both 1864 and 1865.

According to WHB, his father died at the age of 38 after two years' illness.

According to Helen Burrows Carlton, WHB's daughter, his father "died in the Civil War when WHB was three".

According to some insurance papers, Martha was 30 and 32 when WHB's brothers were born.

Illinois marriage records show that Marth Married Byran Bartlett on 21 SEP 1854, and was a minor at the time.

Jackie Drybread shows Martha and Thomas having three children, born between 1857 and 1861.

Combining these alleged facts, I've come up with date ranges for the folks involved. These should provide a context for searching out the relevent primary sources.

      NEHEMIAH LOWELL AND DESCENDANTS

It is said that his father was John R. Lowell, but I doubt it.

He is probably a descendant of Joseph and Sarah M. (Prescott) Lowell (35), p. 19, of Hampton, N.H., through one of his sons, David, Jeremiah or James, probably James, as he moved to Salisbury, N.H., where Nehemiah once lived and where he gave a deed of land Dec. 1, 1821, the land being in Andover, but he was of Salisbury, N.H.

      See James Lowell (61) , page 25.
