Walter came to the U.S. in 1637 on an unknown ship, but possibly the Hopewell according to Joan Guilford. The Search for the Mary and John states that he came on the Speedwell. He settled first at Boston, then moved to Dorchester for a year or so, and then to Taunton. Many other settlers of Taunton were from Taunton, Somerset, England. He became a freeman in Plymouth 4 Dec 1638. He was a tanner, and an early list of inhabitants shows that he had a family of eight persons. He purchased land in 1655 from Arthur Harris of Plymouth, which he later assigned to his son Joseph Deane. Other records give the names of his other children. He didn't leave a will. He and Eleanor were first cousins. Their common ancestors were Walter Deane and Joan Walsele.
