He then practiced medicine with good success for a few years, until he became a confirmed consumptive. After consulting some of his brother colleagues they came to the conclusion and said that a very short time might close his usefulness. He then turned his attention to other reformed practices of medicine. In a few months his health began to recuperate and he continued his practice in this city in the reformed schools, until he was elected professor of materia medica in one of the southern medical colleges.
