Per Mary Coxhead--William Coxhead was a well to do publisher in London, and lived in Islington with his wife and 6 children. He established a branch of his business in New York, making frequent trips between his business in London and the New York branch. He always supported his family in comfort and good style. Finally information reached his wife in Islington that he had a wife in New York. She came to New York to investigate and found that the information was correct. The lady whom he had married left him and her family threatened to make trouble for him so he left New York and went to Rochester, NY, where he took the name of Barrowdale. There he married again and had a family.
In the meanwhile, his first wife secured a divorce in New York before returning home. Later on she married a second time in England, Charles Mansfield, who kept a posting inn on the London and Brighton mail route. When he died, he left all his money to his wife. When she died in 1848, William Coxhead returned to England and claimed a share in her estate. Her children did not contest the claim and allowed him to have the money. Their mother's divorce, while valid in New York was not legal in England. They also did not wish to bring any shame or reproach on their mother's good name.
