Jane Downing, eldest daughter of Thomas, was born on July 27, 1761. Her
sister, Mary Downing, the next born in that family, was born on October 14,
1763. Three sources, including the "History of Chester County", 1881, confirm

old; Mary, 49. Both deaths occurred in West Chester, Chester County,
  • Note:
Research has failed to show any widespread disaster in Chester County on that
date. The intreguing question remains: What did these two middle-aged sisters
die of on the same date? Fire? Drowning? Coincidence? These are the things
that make genealogical research so very fascinating.
