  • ID: I752
  • Name: George Christopher ALLAN
  • Given Name: George Christopher
  • Surname: Allan
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: in sometime around,1840-1850's
  • Death: in sometime around,1910/11
  • Note:
BIOGRAPHY: He was sent to sea as a young boy of 15 or so. His 2 elder brothers
had both drowned at sea. He had been at school, but after his mother died, his
father pulled him out of school and sent him to sea.
  • Note:
BIOGRAPHY: He travelled to Australia at one point, and fell in love with the
country. It was to become his goal to return and settle his family there. On his
way home he was shipwrecked, and determined to leave the sea. He joined the
local constabulary, and made it to Detective. At night he studied.
  • Note:
BIOGRAPHY: However, a passing preacher interested him in Primitive Methodism.
Although the preacher was later found to be a rogue, George went on to become a
lay preacher. His superior officer warned him that this would have a deleterious
effect upon his career prospects, but this did not deter him. At some stage, his
arm was damaged, and eventually he was forced to leave the police force. He
became a Health Inspector. At this time the family lived at East Ham.
  • Note:
BIOGRAPHY: He was a strict man who forbade recreational reading in the family
home. His daughter Ada used to take her books into the toilet! The family
attended church services 3 times each Sunday. The church they attended was
stern, and Ada wanted to attend a happier church. She refused to stand or kneel
at services, until her father relented and allowed her to attend her prefered
place of worship. When she was still at school, some of her male friends would
walk her home, but this soon ceased as one by one they were terrorised by her
father. They would apparently tell her that they'd love to walk her home, but it
    'hurt' to much!
  • Note:
BIOGRAPHY: George developed cancer before he was able to move his family to
Australia. His wife Jane, Gert, Ada and Eileen stayed in England to care for
him. Nell and Fred Davis bought Margery out with them. Cecil followed in order
to find work and get established before Ada and Eileen arrived. They set out
after George died, bringing Jane and Gert with them.
